Mr. Don Carlson, Education Director of Microsoft Asia Pacific visits CHMS

On the 23rd of August, the Education Director of Microsoft Asia Pacific, Mr Don Carlson visited CHMS. This is the second visit of a Microsoft’s Asia Pacific Education Representative since the first visit in 2014 of Ms. Felicia Brown, Microsoft Asia Pacific Project Manager.

Mr Don Carlson was accompanied by Mr Danial Azizan Henry (Microsoft Brunei’s SME Lead) and arrived at CHMS at 2.30pm. They were warmly welcomed by Madam Tan Been Tiem, assistant principal of CHMS; Mr Matthew Wong, Head of Computer Department; Mr. William Wang, Head of ICT department; Madam Kalpana Kishorekumar, head of Humanities Department; Madam Emily Tham, head of Mathematics Department and other teachers.

Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS), BSB, has been recognized as Microsoft Showcase School for three consecutive years. In the past three years, the school has conducted a series of courses and training activities for the private schools in Brunei. With its distinguished global recognition as a Showcase School, the school vows to continue its commitment as the leader of education field and its progressive technology approach to bring holistic education to the students.

The school introduced the history, vision and mission of the school to the visitors and highlighted their best practices and achievements.

In her welcoming speech, Madam Tan Been Tiem explained how the school realizes the change in teaching and learning to help students master the 21st century skills. She stressed that teachers have successfully integrated Microsoft tools into teaching, including using Windows 10, Office 365, OneNote management and notebook applications and other office software, as well as using Skype, OneDrive, etc. in the classroom.

She added that Microsoft technology has enhanced the learning and teaching performance of the students and teachers. Microsoft tools have allowed the school to adapt effective strategies and innovative ways in the teaching and learning process. The school is looking forward to achieving more with Microsoft.

Microsoft’s Asia Pacific Education Director, Mr Don Carlson in his speech praised the commitment of the school to provide quality education to students. Mr. Carlson also appreciates the unremitting efforts of the school leaders, management and teachers. He said that Microsoft technology has evolved into a highly innovative 21st century classroom to fulfil the learners’ needs and he praised the advantages of technology to promote the 21st century students’ core competencies.

Six Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts (MIE Experts) demonstrated a variety of Microsoft 365 office tools, mail processing and administrative calendar integrated tools, such as OneNote and Class Notebook, Skype, Office Mix, Sway, Minecraft and Lifeliqe. Since 2014, there are total of 6 teachers from CHMS who are recognised and certified as MIE Experts by Microsoft.

The Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Expert program is an exclusive program created to recognize global educator visionaries who are using technology to pave the way for their peers in the effective use of technology for better learning and student outcomes. MIE Experts help Microsoft to lead innovation in education. They advocate and share their thoughts on effective use of technology in education with peers and policy makers. They provide insight for Microsoft on new products and tools for education, and they exchange best practices as they work together to promote innovation in teaching and learning.

Mr Don Carlsson visited the various school’s facilities and witnessed a variety of subject teaching and learning activities.
Madam Tan Been Tiem also briefed the Education Director on the future plans of the school. She said that it their visit was a memorable day as CHMS is the first school visited by Education Director of Microsoft Asia Pacific in Brunei.
