CHMS SECONDARY SCHOOL IN BRIEF:
The secondary school comprises the upper and lower secondary sections. In the lower secondary section, both Year 7 and Year 8 follow the SPN 21 curriculum. The Year 8 students are prepared for the Student Progress Examination (SPE), the public examination at the end of Year 8. In the current upper secondary level, the students are prepared for the Brunei Cambridge GCE’O’ Level examination which they will sit for at the end of Form 5. The present Year 7 and Year 8 students however may sit for the same examination at the end of either Year 10 or year 11 depending on their SPA (Student Progress Assessment) after Year 8.
The lower secondary level consist of Year 7 and Year 8. Depending on their SPA, Year 8 students may proceed to either the 2-year or 3-year upper secondary programme. Under each programme, they may go to either the Science stream or to the Art stream.
The academic year is divided into mid-year and final year. For each half year, the Y7 students are required to sit for one test and one examination while the Year 8 students must sit for 1 test and the mid-year examination for the 1st half year and for the trial examination and graduation examination for the 2nd half year. Also forming part of the academic assessment scheme are the student’s classwork, homework and project work.
Depending on their PMB results, the 2009 Form 3 students who will pass the PMB will proceed to a 2-year upper secondary education in either the Science or the Art stream. This means that this batch of students will sit for the GCE’O’ level examinations in 2011.
Depending on their SPA, the 2009 Year 8 students will proceed to either a 2-year or a 3-year upper secondary education in either the Science or the Art stream. This means that this year’s Year 8 students will sit for the GCE’O’ Level examinations at the end of either Year 10 or Year 11. The same scheme applies to the current and future Y7 students.

The subjects offered for Year 7 & Year 8 are Bahasa Malayu, English Language, Chinese Language, Mathematics, Science, Commercial Studies, Physical Education, Geography, Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB), History, Computer Studies, Music, Arts and Physical Education.
The upper secondary section is divided into 2 streams, the Art stream and the Science stream.
The subjects offered for the Art stream students are: Bahasa Melayu, Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, Geography, Principles of Accounts, Commercial Studies, Combined Science, Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) and Art. Students are required to take all the subjects, but they can choose between Art and Geography in the GCE’O’ Level Examination.
The subjects offered for the science stream students are Bahasa Melayu, Chinese Language, English Language, Additional Mathematics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) together with Geography and Principles of Accounts as optional subjects.
Student Progress Report
All test and exam papers are marked and returned to the students. Students’ test grades are posted on the school website which parents may access by using a personalized username and password. Mid-year progress report sheets are collected by the parents during the open day scheduled for this purpose. During this time, the parents can meet with their child’s teachers on a one-to-one basis for purposes of discussing the progress of their child.
