CHMS PRIMARY SCHOOL IN BRIEF:

The CHMS primary section is divided into the lower and upper primary levels. Of the lower primary levels, Year 1 and Year 2 are under the SPN 21 curriculum  in this school year while Primary 3 are still using the old curriculum. By school year 2011, all 3 levels will be using the SPN 21 curriculum. Of the upper primary levels, Year 4 and Year 5 are under SPN 21 curriculum while Primary 6 are still under the old curriculum. By school year 2011, all 3 levels will be using the SPN 21 curriculum. Students in the upper primary levels are prepared for the P.S.R public examination at the end of Primary 6. This examination covers the entire upper primary level curriculum. For the SPN-21 levels, aside from the specified learning areas, emphasis is placed on the development of the following essential skills:

  • Communication Skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking)

  • Numeracy Skills

  • Scientific and ICT Skills

  • Problem-Solving Skills (thinking and creativity)

  • Work and Study Skills

  • Self-Management and Competitive Skills (entrepreneurship)

  • Interpersonal Skills

  • Physical Skills

  • Aesthetic Skills

  • Other 21st Century skills in Digital Age Literacy

There is also the integration of the following core values and attitudes:

Lower primary
The students of the lower primary levels must meet both the academic and conduct criteria for promotion to the next level. The academic year is divided into mid-year and final year. For each half year, the students are required to sit for one test and one examination. Also forming part of the academic assessment scheme are the student’s class work, homework and project work. There is no public examination at the end of the lower primary level.

Upper primary
The students of the upper primary levels must meet both the academic and conduct criteria for promotion to the next level. In addition, the Primary 6 students must pass the Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (P.S.R) examination at the end of Primary 6 to move to Year 7.

The academic year is divided into mid-year and final year. For each half year, the Year 4 and Year 5 students are required to sit for one test and one examination. The Primary 6 students must sit for 1 test and the mid-year examination for the 1st half year and for the trial examination and graduation examination for the 2nd half year. Also forming part of the academic assessment scheme are the student’s classwork, homework and project work.

 

EDUCATION APPROACH:

Lower primary
In the lower primary section, students follow a curriculum in eleven learning areas as follows: Chinese, Bahasa Melayu, English, Maths, MIB, Computer, Music, P.E, Moral, Art and Civics. The medium of instruction is English except for the Bahasa Melayu and Chinese language subjects.

Upper primary
In the upper primary section, students follow a curriculum in thirteen learning areas as follows:Chinese, Bahasa Melayu, English, Maths, Science, Computer, Social Studies, Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB), Music, P.E, Moral, Art and Civics. However, students only sit five papers in the P.S.R examination: Bahasa Malayu, English, Maths, Science and MIB subjects.

Student Progress Report
All test and exam papers are marked and returned to the students. Students’ test grades are posted on the school website which parents may access by using a personalized username and password. Mid-year progress reports are collected by the parents during the open day scheduled for this purpose. During this time, the parents can meet with their child’s teachers on a one-to-one basis for purposes of discussing their child’s progress.
